AMHERST — An incident in which several people were located with blood on themselves, following a possible fistfight, and a brief vehicle pursuit that led to the arrest of a man wanted in Georgia, were among 234 calls for service handled by Amherst Police over the weekend.
Sunday at 12:19 a.m., police responded to a Belchertown Road home, issuing a $300 ticket to a 20-year-old resident of the home for violating the town’s nuisance house bylaw. The ticket was handed out after officers found several people there covered in blood, some with blood on their clothes and at least one with blood on his mouth and hands, likely the result of an altercation involving around 10 people, according to police.
A 52-year-old Leverett man at the scene allegedly puffed out his chest and yelled at officers, leading him to be taken into custody on a charge of disorderly conduct, police said. Others who had been involved in the fight were also uncooperative.
Another Leverett man, 23, allegedly exposed himself to police officers and those at the scene by dropping his pants. He is being summoned to court on charges of disorderly conduct and indecent exposure, police said.
Nearly 24 hours later, a 29-year-old Austell, Georgia man was arrested, early Monday morning, after police attempted to pull over the vehicle he was driving with stolen license plates attached to it. The man abandoned the black Nissan Altima on Dana Street late Sunday night and took off on foot, leading police, using a K-9 unit, to try to find him in the woods. The man was eventually located walking on South Pleasant Street.
In addition to having a fugitive from justice warrant from Georgia, the man is facing charges of possession of more than 10 ounces of marijuana, possession with intent to distribute a class D drug, receiving stolen property under $1,200, failure to stop for police, operating a motor vehicle with a number plate violation to conceal identity, operating an unregistered motor vehicle and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.
Other incidents kept police busy during the weekend, including at 9:52 p.m. Saturday, when a disturbance took place inside and outside a downtown store where college-age people allegedly grabbed a stool from a child, leading to an argument and shoving between the child’s father and the other people. All people involved had left the vicinity when police got there, according to employees.
Police also issued a warning to Sunset Avenue residents Saturday at 4:01 p.m. for holding a large party, with some guests allegedly urinating in public.
