AMHERST — Both the Amherst Regional and Union 26 school committees met in executive session late Monday afternoon, even with school vacation underway.
With some members of the committees in person at the Amherst Regional Middle School cafeteria and others participating virtually, they each took unanimous votes, in accordance with the state’s Open Meeting Law, “to discuss the reputation, character, physical condition or mental health, rather than professional competence, of an individual, or to discuss complaints or charges brought against, a public officer, employee, staff member or individual with no intent to return to open session.”
No additional details were available about the meeting and the subject at the center of the executive session. Kelly Gonzalez, an attorney with Long, DiPietro, Gonzalez LLP, a Hingham based firm specializing in school law, was also in attendance.
The two committees typically meet to hire and settle contracts with the superintendent and other central office personnel, such as the district’s finance director.
The regional panel includes five members of the Amherst School Committee, with two Pelham representatives and one apiece from Shutesbury and Leverett. The Union 26 panel has six members, with equal representation from Amherst and Pelham.
