Several Amherst Regional indoor track and field athletes kicked off what is to be a busy weekend for the Hurricanes on Thursday and Friday afternoon at New Balance Nationals in Boston.

On Thursday, Amherst freshman Claire Fortin participated in the girls freshman long jump and recorded an impressive 12th-place finish. Fortin’s jump of 16 feet, 3.25 inches placed her in the top half of the 25 participants. Fortin will also compete in the freshman 60-meter dash on Saturday.

Amherst’s 4x200-meter relay team of Ololara Baptiste, Emilia Luetjen, Ruby Austin and Moriah Luetjen raced in the event’s prelims, turning in a new Massachusetts-best time of 1:43.29 – good for 33rd place out of the 99 participating teams. The prelims were held on Friday, and the finals will be held on Saturday.

Also set to compete on Saturday is Hurricanes senior Logan Alfandari in the boys weight throw championship. Alfandari is the Massachusetts state champion in Division 3.

Perhaps the main event for Amherst is the girls 4x400 meter relay, as the ‘Canes won the event at the New England Championship two weeks ago. Their squad of Baptiste, Skylar Fox and the Luetjen twins are looking to bring home a coveted national championship from Boston. The finals for that event are on Sunday.
