HADLEY — Bed Bath & Beyond will close its location at Mountain Farms Mall sometime this year as part of 230 store closures announced by the retailer since the start of the new year.

In a statement from the company, which closed its store at the Holyoke Mall Crossing in 2021, the exact timing of the Hadley store’s shuttering is not yet known.

“Store closing sales will commence and continue over the next few weeks and months,” a statement from the company’s media relations office reads.

The Hadley location, in a plaza that includes numerous other stores, including Wal-Mart and Barnes & Noble, opened in December 2009 in a space previously occupied by Linens N Things.

Bed Bath & Beyond, founded in 1971, has offered affordable home decor, kitchenware and college dorm room furniture. But the retailer has been challenged by the pandemic and the shift to online shopping. The closing of the Holyoke location, after about 25 years in business, came during a previous restructuring.

Brooke Kay, a spokeswoman for W.S. Development of Chestnut Hill, the developer of the Mountain Farms Mall property, said the aim at all its properties is to build strong relationships with tenants and offer them support to achieve success.

“We are sad to see Bed, Bath & Beyond go at Mountain Farms, but are actively exploring new concepts to introduce to the community,” Kay said. “We look forward to growing alongside the Hadley community and are excited for what’s to come.”

The site at 335 Russell St. has evolved since W.S. Development began revitalizing the property in 1997, periodically replacing tenants in the main building, including in 2020 when Ulta Beauty took the space that had been occupied by Pier 1 Imports, as well as making changes to buildings on the perimeter of the site, such as demolishing the former Burger King restaurant and a former bank building and replacing those with a building that includes tenants such as L.L. Bean and Five Guys.
