EASTHAMPTON — Senior captains Nelson Gomez and Connor Donnis combined for three touchdowns while the Easthampton defense silenced Frontier Regional in a 26-0 victory Friday night.
Gomez scored twice in the first half, and Donnis added the night cap as the Eagles (2-4, 2-1 Intercounty South) won their second straight game.
“Our team had a lot of energy from the start, and we just really wanted to win this game,” Gomez said. “We didn’t want to lose to Frontier. Everyone balled with their hearts out and that’s what we needed tonight.”
Frontier Regional (1-4, 1-2) managed only two first downs, both in the second half, as it struggled to move the ball against Easthampton’s stingy front seven.
“Our two D-tackles, me and Cooper (Goudreau), we closed that middle up and our D-ends [Gavin Gorman and Kinnon McColgan] contained,” Donnis said. “Our linebackers played great. There’s nothing else to say. We played great defense.”
Easthampton’s defense allowed only four running plays of at least 5 yards: 11, 6, 5 and 5.
“They were very aggressive and played well,” said Frontier coach Scott Dredge, who added the team was missing its starting quarterback and center, among others. “We’re trying to plug kids in and make the best of it.”
Gomez gave the Eagles momentum early with a 30-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Colin Hogan. Facing third-and-19, Hogan found Gomez for about 10 yards. The senior turned for the sidelines, made two defenders miss and received a key block downfield from classmate Dylan McGinn-Stevens. A Luis Salgado conversion run with 4 minutes, 35 seconds left gave the Eagles an 8-0 lead.

“I saw daylight and kept going,” Gomez said.
Salgado got the ball back three players later with an interception. A personal foul on Frontier set Easthampton up with first-and-goal at the 10. Three plays later Vynce Carr scored from 1 yard out for a 14-0 advantage.
Easthampton took a 20-0 lead just before halftime. Facing third-and-5 at the 26, Carr picked up the first down with a 21-yard run. Gomez scored on the next play.
“I think we’ve found ourselves in the last couple of weeks and we’re starting to find a rhythm in the backfield with our running backs,” Easthampton coach Kyle Dragon said. “There was a lot of momentum and a lot of energy on the field and sidelines tonight.”
The Redhawks moved the ball during each of their first two drives of the second half, but both stalled. Konnor James picked up a first down with a touch 3-yard run on the first series, but Hogan knocked down a pass attempt on third down, and Patrick Larson batted down a pass attempt on a fake punt.
On Frontier’s next series, Kaden James bulldozed for 11 yards and a first down. However, a flag on second down set the Redhawks back, and Carr blitzed the backfield for a loss on third down.
“Kaden’s a great kid,” Dredge said. “Hard, tough-nosed. What I appreciate is he does everything I ask him to, even play quarterback tonight.”
Ben Caron started at quarterback with James filling in at times.
Donnis capped senior night with an 8-yard touchdown run with just over 1 minute left in the game. It was the second career touchdown for the lineman, who also scored as a junior.
“This touchdown was way better, a way better feeling,” Donnis said. “The whole team was so happy, and it made me hyped. It was a great feeling.”
Jake Kostek recovered a fumble for Easthampton. McGinn-Stevens had a sack.
Jaxon Spearance had one of Frontier’s two interceptions. Jacob Rice had a pass deflection.
