CHICOPEE — The Granby girls lacrosse team lost in the waning seconds to Chicopee Comp when Amelia Gibson leaped in front of the net and put her shot past goalie Mya Fillion stick side Friday.

The Colts won the ensuing faceoff and ran out the clock for the 10-9 win.

“In the second half we saw the potential for what we can do,” Granby first-year coach Sallie Gilliland said. “We were able to move the ball and see our weaker areas in the first half and we improved on those things in the second half.”

Comp controlled the game from the start. Kathleen Brooks started the scoring with 20 minutes, 33 seconds left when she roll dodged off her defender in front of the net and put a shot away with a bounce off the turf. Brooks had three first-half goals as Comp led 6-2 at halftime.

Granby senior Kate Sarnacki did all she could to help her team in the second half. Sarnacki finished with five goals, including four in the second half. The game action was Sarnacki’s first since suffering a torn ACL playing soccer last season.

The Rams made a run of four straight goals midway through the second half to tie the game at 8-8 with 6:19 to go. Granby had momentum as the final minutes ticked off the clock, but Gibson’s goal ended the threat.

Julia Frappier had a goal and one assist, while Jenna Patruno had three goals for Granby.

Gilliland was pleased with how Fillion played in net throughout the second half.
