HATFIELD — A fourth-quarter surge sent the Smith Academy girls basketball team past Hampden Charter, 64-46, on Monday night.
The Falcons scored 21 points in the final eight minutes to pick up their 10th win of the season.
“They kept their composure, they stayed calm, they didn’t let the outer elements take over them,” Smith Academy head coach Tomie Lafond Zerneri said. “They really just continued to stick to our basics.”
The first half was a parade to the free-throw line, as opposed to the second half that had more of a flow. In total, the Falcons took 36 shots from the foul line against the Wolves.
“The message was patience, contain, and keep going to the basket,” Lafond Zerneri said. “The message was no more reaching, no more stealing, just contain the ball and don’t let the outer influences affect our game.”
Jane Lavallee and Alexa Jagodzinski each had 15 points as Smith Academy’s top scorers, followed by Anna Scagel’s 12 points.
“Molly O’Brien has been sick for a week, today was her first day back, and I said go out there and just spread your arms out and she did amazing coming back,” Lafond Zerneri said. “Caitlin Graves did great. [Jagodzinski] had foul trouble, she did the best she could in that, she perservered. Honestly, every single one of them were fantastic tonight.”
