NORTHAMPTON — There was no shortage of goals during the Smith Vocational girls soccer’s senior night on Monday against Putnam, as the Vikings erupted for four tallies in the first half and added five more in the second to trounce the Beavers 9-0 – improving their perfect record to 7-0 this fall.
Caitlin Willard, Vanessa Antil and Maggie Lauder were celebrated following the game, and how fitting that all three of them impacted Monday’s contest in several ways.
Willard dazzled for a hat trick, scoring four goals and adding two assists to pace Smith Voc’s offensive attack. Antil, who normally plays center back, moved up to record a goal in the second half after shutting down Putnam’s offense through the first 40-plus minutes.
And although Vikings head coach Alicia Carter wanted to involve Lauder in the goal-scoring party, her goaltending prowess made it tough for Carter to pull her out of the box.
“I would’ve liked to have gotten [Lauder] on the field, but goalies are hard to take out, especially playing against a stronger Putnam offense who was giving us a little bit of a battle back there,” Carter said. “To have the other two seniors score on senior night is always a great accomplishment, especially [Antil] who doesn’t get that opportunity often.”
Erin Miller tallied one goal and two assists while Willow Hicks, Monique Fredette and Natalie Gaudette each scored one goal apiece to round out the Vikings’ goal scorers.
The trio of seniors are a huge reason why Smith Vocational is in prime position to win the Tri-County league in dominant fashion. Including Monday, the Vikings are currently outscoring opponents a combined 44-0 through their first seven games.
“The dedication, the commitment, and the leadership out of them – it’s incredible,” Carter said of her seniors. “They’ve led the way these last few years, and they mean so much to the underclassmen. Half the time I don’t even have to tell them to do stuff, they already have it done.”
