HS Roundup: Allie Randall, Emma Kornbluth team for doubles sweep in Belchertown’s win over Holyoke

Allie Randall and Emma Kornbluth cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles to power the Belchertown girls tennis team to a 4-1 victory over Holyoke on Wednesday.

Katie Collins and Edith Audette were 6-4, 6-4 winners at No. 1 doubles for Belchertown (7-1). Amanda Murray (6-2, 6-1) and Gianna Picardi (6-4, 6-3) were singles winners at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively.

Holyoke’s Lilly Lawrence was a 6-4, 7-5 winners at No. 3 singles to lead the Knights.

Northampton 3, Minnechaug 2 – Emmi Warren won a tight 7-6, 7-5 match at No. 2 singles, and Ruth Pollin-Gay was a 6-3, 6-2 winner at No. 3 to help the Devils snag a road victory in Wilbraham.

Casey Barber and Giselle Ohm held on for a marathon point at first doubles, helping Northampton secure the team win via a 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 victory.

Frontier 3, Mohawk Trail 2 — Kayla Fagan walked away with a victory in No. 2 singles (6-1, 6-1), Ella Sibley won in No. 3 singles (6-4, 6-0) while Brooke Charest and Hailey Fernandez earned a 6-1, 6-1 win in No. 2 doubles to propel the Redhawks to a victory in South Deerfield Wednesday. 

Boys tennis

Frontier 3, Pope Francis 2 — With the match tied 2-2, Xavier Fripp and Noah Nichols sealed the win for the Redhawks with a 6-3, 6-7, 12-10 comeback win in doubles to lift Frontier to a win over the Cardinals in Springfield Tuesday. 

Casey Bestler won 6-3, 7-5 in No. 2 singles while Oliver Brown continued his unbeaten streak with a 6-3, 6-4 win in No. 3 singles.

Gateway 23, Amherst 17 – Thea Meyerhoff and Ali Fish each reached base five times and scored three runs, as the Gators showed patience at the plate and drew 24 walks to capture the victory.

Corinne Charlebois smacked four hits, including three triples, to power Amherst. Arianna Roberts reached base four times and scored three runs.

Hampshire 14, Pittsfield 2 – Kalin Dubay ripped three hits and scored three runs in the top spot of the lineup, and sister Reagan Dubay struck out seven in five solid innings in the circle to lift the Raiders to a dominant five-inning run-ruled win in Pittsfield.

Hampshire’s Caroline Payson was 2-for-3 with three RBIs to aid a 15-hit attack.

East Longmeadow 1, South Hadley 0 – Ella Schaeffer struck out 19 in another standout performance, but the Tigers were held off the board completely by Spartans ace Reilly McCauley.

Schaeffer and Grace Matyszewski had two hits apiece for pace the South Hadley offense.

Springfield Central 12, Smith Academy 0 – Quinn Carlson struck out three in the circle for the Falcons, which received hits from Caitlin Graves, Marissa Belina and Sofia Cestero in the loss.

Frontier 23, Athol 3 (5) — Skyler Steele went 5-for-5 with two home runs and drove in a whopping 10 runs for the Redhawks, which picked up an independent win over the Bears in South Deerfield Wednesday. 

Ashley Taylor doubled twice and drove in two runs, Delaney Fifield recorded two hits and two RBIs, Olivia Machon singled in a run while Taylor struck out five and Bella Orrell added two strikeouts in the win for Frontier. 

Pioneer 11, Northampton 10 — Luci Burnap singled home the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh to walk it off and hand Pioneer a victory in Northfield on Wednesday. 

Haly Doucette-Kaplan, Greta Lepore, Jayda Alejandro and Sasha Rodriguez each collected two hits for Northampton while Emily Kajka struck out eight in the circle. 

West Springfield 16, Easthampton 3 – The Terriers plated five runs in the fourth inning and added seven more in the fifth to secure a victory on Wednesday.

Baseball

Pioneer 6, Hopkins 4 — Tied at one going into the fourth, the Panthers managed to score in each inning from there including a two-run seventh to earn a Suburban League West victory in Hadley on Wednesday. 

Chace Earle pitched the first five innings for the Golden Hawks, striking out seven and allowing three hits. Matt Vassallo hit a home run, singled and drove in two, Earle tallied two hits, Wyatt Cook doubled while Harry West finished with a hit and an RBI for Hopkins. 

Frontier 6, Hampshire 4 — The Redhawks scored five in the sixth inning and hung on late to knock off the Raiders in Suburban League West action in Westhampton on Wednesday. 

Kaden James drilled three hits and knocked in two RBIs with a single in the sixth, Braeden Dion and Brady Poreda each had two hits, Carter Miller got the win on the mound while Max Skribiski-Banack came on to earn the save for Frontier.

Trailing 6-0 in the bottom of the seventh, Hampshire made it interesting with four runs in its final at-bat. Riley Florek had two hits to pace the offense, and Zach Phakos roped a double as part of the seventh-inning rally. Will Hogan struck out three in 5 1/3 innings on the mound.

Greenfield 2, Easthampton 0 — Patrick Larson went the distance, surrendered just three hits and struck out 13 for the Eagles, though the visiting Green Wave were able to walk away victorious on Wednesday. 

Jason Sigda had the lone hit for Easthampton. 

Pope Francis 14, Belchertown 1 – Daniel Hulmes finished with two hits for the Orioles, while Jake Waller had a hit and an RBI in the team’s five-inning loss to powerhouse Pope Francis.

Springfield Central 14, Holyoke 4 – Matt Dumoulin doubled and drove in a pair of runs to power the Purple Knights’ offense on Wednesday in Springfield.

Girls ultimate

Amherst 9, Northampton 4 – The Hurricanes ripped off eight straight points after falling behind 1-0, ultimately securing a victory on a windy Wednesday at JFK Middle School.

The ’Canes were led by Addie Mager (3 goals), Isla Cusick (4 assists), Leah Kalman (2 assists) and Violet Berube (2 assists).

Boys lacrosse

Northampton 9, Amherst 5 – The Blue Devils won their fifth game in a row, improving to 5-0 on the season with a home victory Wednesday night.

Amherst dropped to 4-2 with the loss.

Boys volleyball

Springfield Central 3, Belchertown 0 – The Orioles got better as the match went along but couldn’t crack a set against the Golden Eagles in a 25-19, 25-22, 26-24 loss.

Gabriel Ibekilo led the way with 13 kills, while Noah Yankson tossed in eight kills. Nicholas Ibekilo and Colin Mullen combined for 27 assists.

Late Tuesday results

Track & field

Hampshire 82, Easthampton 53 (boys); Hampshire 97, Easthampton 43 (girls) – Oscar Schiff (1 mile 5:08) and Owen Cubi (2 mile, 10:54) swept the distance events to lift the Raiders to a victory on the boys’ side Tuesday.

Easthampton’s Nelson Gomez won four events to pace his side, topping the field in the high jump (5-6), long jump (19-0.75), triple jump (38-5.5) and 200 meters (25.5). Jack Skowron won the javelin (95-6) and shot put (30-10.25) for the Eagles.

On the girls’ side, Kat Simmons took first for Hampshire in the javelin (70-5) and shot put (27-4), while Gabriella Dybacki won the high jump (4-10), Rylee Joseph won the triple jump (29-6.5), Natalie Dunlap won the 400 hurdles (1:16.26), Ada Comer won the 2 mile (12:40), Charlotte Niswonger won the 1 mile (5:53) and Bethany Tobiasz won the 100 (13.15).

Easthampton’s Molly Marsh won the discus (70-0), while teammates Arie Kuchyt (long jump, 15-4) and Sonia Romero (200, 28.1) were also individual winners.

Girls lacrosse

Smith Voc 9, Southwick 5 – The Vikings won their second game of the season on Tuesday, buoyed by an Erin Miller hat trick.

Haileyanna Bacon-Swartz, Erin Judd, Katelynn Hennessy, Ainsley Chrzanowski, Caydence Hussey and Kaylin Dumas also tallied for Smith Voc, which received six saves in net from goalie Jordyn Wolf.
