High schools: Frontier outlasts Belchertown in dual wrestling opener

The Frontier wrestling team won six of the eight matches contested, and ultimately held off Belchertown for a 42-36 independent dual meet decision on Tuesday night in Belchertown.
Ber Calhoun notched a pin for the Redhawks at 113 pounds, get past Belchertown’s Alex Maroney in 46 seconds.
Kaden James (215 pounds), Massimo Dibari (144) and Max Hunter (285) also snagged first-period pinfalls for Frontier, while Konnor James secured a second-period pin at 157. Jocelyn Antes outlasted Belchertown’s Brogan Bottari at 120 pounds, notching a third-period pin for the Hawks after giving up a seven-point move in the second period.
Belchertown picked up wins from Andre Jarry at 138 pounds (pin over Jaxson Byrne) and Evan Perkins at 150 (pin over Matthew Taraburka).
Smith Voc 50, St. Mary’s 27 – Sofia Zina poured in a game-high 20 points as the Vikings cruised to a home win in Northampton on Tuesday.
Makayla Tatro tossed in 16 points for Smith Voc (1-1), while Julianis Suarez and Nyia-Marie Forbes added four points apiece.
Belchertown 47, Mount Greylock 33 – The Orioles trailed 2-0, but that was the only time they were behind in a Central League victory on the road in Williamstown on Tuesday.
Belchertown (2-0) led 13-7 after one quarter and 24-14 at halftime. The Mounties (2-1) cut the deficit to 33-25 after three quarters but Belchertown outscored the hosts by a 14-8 margin in the final eight minutes to pull away for the impressive win.

South Hadley 73, Easthampton 45 — A 22-point third quarter led the Tigers to an easy win over the Eagles behind Tim Loughrey’s game-high 25 points. Jack Loughrey (13) and Noah Hambley (11) joined him in double figures.
Easthampton’s Patrick Larson (12 points) and Jasper Alvarez (nine) led the way for the Eagles.
Granby 57, Palmer 51 — Riley Goodhind poured in a game-high 19 points, Sawyer Clarke added a dozen points and NeNe Fernandez chipped in 10 as the Rams defeated the Panthers on Monday night.
Granby improved to 2-0 with the win.
Putnam 54, Amherst 51 — The ‘Canes outscored Putnam by five in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough to steal a come-from-behind win on Monday, as Akbar Allah’s 20 points were too much for Amherst to overcome.
Samuel Woodruff (15 points) and Mitchell Carey (11 points) led Amherst in scoring.
Pope Francis 83, Northampton 59 — Pope Francis’ Sam Brigham (26) and Ryan Vedovelli (25) combined for 51 points as the Blue Devils has no answer for the Cardinals’ one-two punch on Monday.
Naihmond Peters-Wolfe had a team-high 18 points for Northampton while Brayden Nichols-Staples added 15 in the loss.
