Emikan Sudan: The Sojourner Truth portrait

Let us not forget that on Feb. 4 there was an unveiling of an original piece of art at Forbes Library created by professor and artist Richard Yarde — a portrait of Sojourner Truth. During the unveiling ceremony there was one vital piece of information missing. The information about why and how the Sojourner Truth canvas came into creation. Well back in 2007-2008, Richard Yarde inquired with The Sojourner Truth Memorial Statue Committee as to how he might contribute to our ongoing projects. At the time we were developing The Sojourner Truth Scholarship for Social Justice Fund which would at that time award two $500 scholarships to graduating high school seniors who demonstrate in an essay their experience and commitment to social justice and equality. From there, Prof. Yarde created an impressive portrait of Sojourner Truth that the committee was able to use to market greeting cards as well as prints of the original canvas to raise funds for the scholarships which today has grown to six scholarships of $1,500 each for graduating seniors that qualify. For those wishing to make a contribution, please contact Carol Rhinehart of the Sojourner Truth Committee/carolvrinehart@gmail.
