NORTHAMPTON — People picking up their Mother’s Day flowers from longtime Northampton business Nuttelman’s Florist will notice a different type of community message greeting them on the shop’s outdoor sign that faces Prospect Street: “Whoever robbed our shop last night, karma is coming.”
According to Mary Nuttelman, the wife of owner Walter Nuttelman, someone jimmied the lock to the shop’s greenhouse at on Tuesday night to gain access to the business. Once inside, the thieves took an undisclosed amount of cash from the cash register, as well as cameras, laptops, checkbooks, checks sent by customers, and envelopes with cash tips in one of the offices.
Walter Nuttelman came on Wednesday at 6 a.m. to find the place a mess, his wife said.
Mary Nuttelman adds the store is working with the police to find the person responsible. Northampton Police did not return calls for comment on Friday.
Nuttelman did not know how much money was in the tip envelope or which customers mailed checks, but she estimates that the robbery will put the business back a couple thousand dollars. One of the envelopes was for a large pizza party for the florist’s staff.
“I will have to wait for the next billing cycle and when somebody calls and tells me they sent in a check, I will have to believe them,” Nuttelman said.
Nuttelman’s has operated in Northampton for 49 years, and residents wishing to support the store in its time of need are flocking over for their flower needs.
“My whole goal in putting that sign up front was to notice the public around us to say this is occurring, and for people to watch your homes,” Nuttelman said. “If you drive by our shop at night time, take an extra look and see if there is anything funny.”
