All but one sport featuring local players has crowned a gold medal winner at the Bay State Games this summer, with several medals given out over the weekend. Only girls basketball remains (July 19-21), as softball, baseball, girls soccer, boys soccer, girls volleyball, boys volleyball and field hockey wrapped up their events on either Saturday or Sunday out in the eastern portion of the Commonwealth.

The big news came from Team Central in the girls soccer tournament. Nine Hampshire County athletes helped Team Central to a title on Saturday at Game On Fitchburg. Avery Cooper (Belchertown), Emma Litz (Belchertown), Morghan Litz (Belchertown), Gabriella Slovack (Belchertown), Brenna Moreno (Granby), Kalli White (Granby), Rylee Joseph (Hampshire), Isabella Lebarron (Hampshire) and Sadie Cyr (Hopkins) were a part of Team Central, which defeated Team Southeast 3-2 in penalty kicks to claim the dramatic victory.

Central went 2-1-1 to tie Southeast for first place after the qualifying rounds, and after tying 0-0 on Friday morning, Central got the better of them Saturday afternoon.

Team West consisted of Fallon Clancy (Belchertown), Allison Morris (Belchertown), Brianna Ribeiro (Belchertown), Maya Tellier (Belchertown), Addison Barr (Easthampton), Allison Fleury (South Hadley), Gwen Marion (South Hadley) and Mikayla Weaver (South Hadley), and they cruised to a 3-0 win over Coastal in Saturday’s bronze medal game after trouncing Team Central 4-0 in the final qualifying game in the morning.

On the boys side, Team West brought home a bronze medal and put together a strong 4-1-1 record in six games throughout the weekend. The efforts of Brian Weston (Amherst), Anias Isaza-Malloy (Easthampton), Colin Holt (Hampshire), Daniel Martin (Hampshire), Owen Miller (Hampshire), Ayden St. Martin (Hampshire) and Carlos David (South Hadley) helped West snatch bronze in a forfeit victory over Southeast (West beat Southeast 7-0 on Friday).

Field hockey, girls volleyball and boys volleyball featured several Hampshire County participants as well, and each team fared well in their respective tournaments.

Team West came up just shy of bronze in field hockey with a 3-1 loss to Coastal on Sunday, with Smith Academy’s Isabella Gavron standing as the lone local athlete on the team.

The two volleyball teams played in the gold medal rounds.

Boys volleyball was led by Jake Gagnon, and the rising junior at Granby helped Team West sweep Team Southeast 2-0 (25-22, 25-18) in a best-of-3 series to win gold at Game On Fitchburg Sunday afternoon.

Ruby Austin (Amherst), Vivian Ross (Belchertown), Abigail Hernandez (Frontier), Olivia Machon (Frontier) and Bailey Martin (Frontier) each played a key role in Team West’s silver medal in girls volleyball. West was swept 2-0 by Team Coastal in Sunday’s gold medal contest.

So with that, including softball and baseball (which concluded last week), six teams with Hampshire County athletes have brought home a medal from the Bay State Games. That number could reach seven depending on the results of girls basketball this coming weekend at Babson College. Brenna Moreno (Granby) and Taylor Bullough (South Hadley) will both be competing for Team West.
