The Southampton 10U softball team stormed out to a 6-0 first-inning lead in its third game (and second of the day) at the 10U Little League Northeast Regional tournament on Thursday afternoon, but it couldn’t generate enough offense to keep pace with Connecticut Valley (Vermont) in a 13-10 loss in Staten Island, N.Y.

Representing Massachusetts after winning the state tournament last month, Southampton is now 0-3 in the state tournament after losing 18-5 in the opening round on Wednesday night.

Although Southampton sits 0-3, it still has a chance when things shift to the single-elimination formate on Saturday. Southampton is the No. 5 seed and will play the fourth seed at 3 p.m., the winner moving on to play the No. 1 seed directly after.

Following Southampton’s six-run inning in the top of the first, Connecticut Valley responded with 10 runs of their own to waste no time jumping ahead 10-6. Southampton then out-scored Connecticut Valley the rest of the way, 4-3.

Southampton also played against Gorham (Maine) on Thursday, falling 11-6 in a hard-fought battle earlier in the afternoon. They led 4-2 after two innings and 6-3 after three, but Maine scored the game’s next eight runs in an offensive onslaught over the next three frames.

The tourney opened with an 18-5 loss to Cranston (Rhode Island).

After a day off on Friday that includes a skills competition, Southampton returns to action on Saturday in the elimination portion of the regional tournament.
