Visiting Richmond shot the lights out in the opening quarter, and the Spiders’ hot start was more than enough to halt the red-hot UMass women’s basketball team on Sunday.

The Spiders drilled seven 3-pointers and made 11-of-13 field goals in the opening 10 minutes to take a commanding 29-8 lead. That was more than enough to keep the Minutewomen at bay, and Richmond drained 17 3s overall to cruise to an 82-52 Atlantic 10 victory at the Mullins Center in Amherst.

The loss halted UMass’ three-game winning streak, as the Minutewomen dropped to 7-7 overall, 2-1 in the A-10.

Richmond (11-5, 2-1), which led 44-15 at halftime, shot 54.2 percent from the field overall and 51.5 percent from 3 (17-for-33).

Rachel Ullstrom was 3-for-3 from 3-point range in the opening quarter as the Spiders jumped on UMass. Ullstrom finished with 16 points, tying for team-high honors with teammate Maggie Doogan (16 points). Addie Budnik scored 10 points for the Spiders, which had 11 different players score points in a balanced effort offensively.

Yahmani McKayle tallied a game-high 18 points to pace UMass, and Allie Palmieri dropped in 15 points. The Minutewomen shot just 36.2 percent from the field and made just 5 of 22 3-pointers.

Richmond set the tone immediately. Katie Hill and Ullstrom hit back-to-back 3s to open the game, and the Spiders made their first eight field goals to start the afternoon with a commanding 22-4 lead.

UMass never got within 20 points the rest of the way, and the hosts suffered their first A-10 loss of the season after a 2-0 start.
