Three up, three down for the UMass men’s soccer team in the NCAA Division I tournament.

The Minutemen’s Cinderella season continued as they defeated No. 11-ranked Virginia 1-0 in the Sweet 16 for their third win of the big dance.

UMass (13-3-5) applied consistent pressure throughout the contest and knocked on the door a number of times, and it finally punched one in thanks to an own-goal from the Cavaliers (10-7-3).

UMass defender Matt Fordham found space on the end line and sent a ball toward Virginia goalie Joey Batrouni. Trying to clear it out, Batrouni got a foot on the ball and poked it away from goal. But the ball quickly deflected off a Virginia defender and into the net to put the Minutemen ahead 1-0 with 18 minutes and change remaining in the second half.

In the first half, UMass recorded six more shots (8-2) than the Cavaliers, including a 3-0 advantage in shots on goal. The Minutemen also had an edge in corner kicks in the game, tallying seven compared to Virginia’s two. UMass star forward Alec Hughes was relatively quiet in the win, and teams are likely to throw the kitchen sink at him defensively the rest of the way, but the Minutemen still found a way to pop one in.

Just as Minutemen keeper Alec Geczy has done all season, he shined once more in the biggest game of his life – shutting down all three shots that came his way in the second half. The senior stopper has now surrendered only one goal in three tournament games.

UMass advanced to play at No. 3 Denver (12-3-4) in the Elite 8 with a trip to the Final Four on the line. Date and time for that game is still to be determined.
