WILLIAMSTOWN — Conditions were less-than-ideal at the Western Massachusetts Div. 2 Track and Field Championship on Saturday at Mount Greylock Regional High School, but Hampshire County athletes persevered and shined through the heavy fog, clouds and occasional rain to turn in some terrific performances.

After the Division 1 Western Mass. meet took place on Friday night in Holyoke, it was D2’s turn to take home some hardware. Local teams competing included Belchertown, Easthampton, Frontier, Hampshire and South Hadley. Among the five schools, there were four individual first place finishes on Saturday as athletes geared up for what they hope to be a long postseason with states and New Englands still ahead.

Mount Greylock’s boys (116 points) and girls (169.5 points) teams won the meet, while Frontier (81) and South Hadley (59) came in second and third on the boys side and second (67) and fourth (46) on the girls side. Belchertown’s girls team finished sixth (36).

Let’s take a look at some of the most notable performances to come out of Williamstown.

Crawford, Hutchinson shine in multiple events for Tigers

Both Maggie Crawford and Nathan Hutchinson competed in several events, and they each turned in a pair of top three finishes – including Crawford taking home first in the 400 hurdles and Hutchinson grabbing the win in the 800.

Crawford’s time of 1:04.80 was a new personal best and the ninth-best time in the state of Massachusetts this season. She also took home second in the 100 hurdles with a personal-best time of 16.29.

“My initial plan was to go fast out of the blocks, which I think my last meet of the regular season I finally got the hang of,” Crawford said of her 400 race. “I just wanted to stick with that pace and push the last 200. With the wind and the rain working against me, I had to work a little bit harder, but it all worked out in my favor.”

Alongside Crawford in the top five were Izzy Scott (second, 2:28.48 in 800), Amiee George (third, 106 feet, 8 inches in javelin), Stella Martinez (third, 33 feet, 4 inches in triple jump) and the Tigers’ 4x400 relay team (third).

Hutchinson competed in the mile to start out his day, turning in a time of 4:33.89 – good for third. After a short rest, he hopped back on the track to race in the 800, where he finished strong and won in a thrilling finish. His time of 2:02.16 just edged Frontier’s Charles Dennis (2:02.21).

“Going into it, I knew I could win,” Hutchinson said. “I was coming off the mile, so I was pretty tired. But I knew I would let everyone else do the work for me, just sit behind them and wait until the final 300 [meters] to make my move. I executed perfectly up to that point, and then I just went for it over the final 100. And it worked.”

Joining Hutchinson with top-five finishes on Saturday are Trevor Sullivan (third, 10:21.67 in two mile), Micah Litovich (fourth, 128 feet, 10 inches in discus), Jameson Webber (fourth, 1:00.01 in 400 hurdles and fourth, 16.00 in 110 hurdles), Matt Gillis (fifth, 52.94 in 400), Gavin Losty (fifth, 134 feet, 1 inch in javelin) and South Hadley’s 4x400 (fourth, 4x800 (fourth) and 4x100 (fifth) relay teams.

Cachiguango dominates, Frontier wins pair of relays

The conditions certainly didn’t bother Frontier’s Ben Cachiguango, who set a PR in the 110 hurdles with a time of 15.13 seconds to take first place while also earning a first place finish in the 400 hurdles with a run of 56.86 seconds.

“I’ve been waiting for this for a long time,” Cachiguango said. “Last year I was injured and couldn’t run at this meet. Going across that finish line felt great.”

Cachiguango had familiar competition in the 110 hurdles, as he knew Greenfield’s Mason Youmell, Mahar’s Mitchell Krasco and South Hadley’s Jameson Webber would be challenging him for the title.

In the final race, Krasco took second (15.13), Youmell placed third (15.81) while Webber took fourth (16.0), with the race coming down to the wire.

“I know Mason, Mitch, Jameson,” Cachiguango said. “We all know each other. I’ll be ready to see them again at states and I know they’re going to be coming for me.”

The Frontier girls 4x400 relay team of Madelyn Antes, Mara Allium, Addie Morrey and Josie Fosnot took first place with a time of 4:22.72, beating South Hadley by .12 seconds.

The Frontier boys 4x800 team of Charlie Dennis, Luke Howard, Gus Radner and Evan Hedlund also walked away with a first place finish with a time of 8:39.82. That was 10 seconds faster than Mt. Greylock (8:49.66), which took second.

Girls long jump title goes to Belchertown’s Fallon Clancy

Fallon Clancy competed in two events on Saturday, and in one of those – the long jump – she brought home a first-place medal. Clancy jumped 16 feet, 4 1/2 inches to take home the top spot in the girls long jump. The senior has had a strong year for the Orioles, and it has led her to a win on the Western Mass. stage. Clancy also ran in the 100, finishing eighth with a time of 13.26. She was the lone Belchertown winner on Saturday.

Elsewhere, the Orioles received strong performances from Maya Tellier (third, 27.09 in 200), Aubrey Klingensmith (fifth, 100 feet, 10 inches in javelin and ninth, 27.77 in 200), Kaia Couture (fifth, 29 feet, 9 1/2 inches in shot put), Alexa Karabetsos (sixth, 32 feet, 1/2 inches in triple jump) and Layla Liminski (seventh, 14 feet, 8 inches in long jump).

Belchertown’s boys team was led by Ben Les, who finished fourth in the two mile in 10 minutes, 25.14 seconds. Liam Howard (sixth, 2:07.75 in 800) had the Os’ lone other top-10 finish.
