The UMass hockey team announced on Wednesday that former Michigan State forward Mikey DeAngelo has joined the Minutemen for the 2025-26 season as a transfer. DeAngelo, a 5-foot-11, 179-pounder, is the first confirmed addition for next season’s UMass team.

BELCHERTOWN — In less than ideal weather conditions, the Belchertown girls tennis team successfully defended its Class B Western Massachusetts title with a 5-0 victory over Frontier on Wednesday in the championship match. Second doubles was the only match to go three sets as the Orioles proved its place as the top-ranked team in Class B, who kept the second-seeded Redhawks pointless for the first time this season.

AMHERST — The Amherst girls tennis team outlasted Ludlow, 4-1, in a marathon match on Monday at the Amherst Middle School Courts during the Class A semifinals of the girls tennis Western Mass. Tournament. The second-seeded Hurricanes took two pivotal points against the No. 3 Lions with match wins in second singles and first doubles — matches that took about two hours — to advance to the Class A championship against top-seeded Longmeadow.

The Belchertown girls tennis team has been a model of consistency since Alanna Grady assumed the head coaching position in 2021. Grady has guided the Orioles to winning records in each of the previous five seasons and this spring’s squad is arguably the best of the bunch.

The Orioles wrapped up their regular season with a 13-1 victory over Northampton on Wednesday, claiming their 11th consecutive win in decisive fashion.

HADLEY – A near-milestone performance from Hopkins Academy pitcher Cassie Dion wasn’t enough as the Golden Hawks softball team fell to Franklin Tech, 4-2, on Wednesday. Dion needed eight strikeouts against the Eagles to become the first player in school history to reach 400 for her career, however the Hawks’ ace came up one short to sit at 399 career Ks following the defeat.

AMHERST – As dark clouds rolled over the fields behind McGuirk Alumni Stadium on Sunday afternoon, the Amherst Regional and Four Rivers Charter School girls ultimate varsity teams put on a show during the Girls Division 1 championship at the 2025 Amherst Ultimate Invitational. Tied 8-8 after regulation, both teams traded possessions for at least 20 minutes in sudden-death overtime, before the Hurricanes finally broke through and found the end zone to win 9-8 and punch their ticket to the National Invitational Tournament.

AMHERST – On a beautiful, sunny day at Hampshire College on Thursday, the Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion Charter School swept Belchertown, 5-0, in boy’s tennis action. The Dragons (8-2) put together a near flawless performance as they shut out the Orioles in the majority of the total games played for their third match victory in a row.

SPRINGFIELD – Drafted college hockey players have the unique ability to jump to the professional ranks days after their college team’s season ends. Cale Makar did it in 2019, joining the Colorado Avalanche during the Stanley Cup Playoffs immediately following UMass hockey’s first ever trip to the Frozen Four.
