Just a week ago, the South Hadley and Frontier softball teams met in their regular-season finales, knowing that there was a strong possibility of meeting in the Western Massachusetts Class B semifinals a handful of days later. And after the No. 3 Tigers and No. 2 Redhawks earned decisive wins in their respective quarterfinal bouts, sure enough, they were back on the diamond on Sunday – battling it out for a spot in the Class B championship.

HADLEY — Trailing 6-0 entering the sixth inning, the Granby softball team gave its best shot at a comeback by rattling off a pair of runs and putting base runners on, but Hopkins Academy’s ace Cassandra Dion shut the door. The Golden Hawks added one more insurance run in the bottom half of the frame and went on to win 7-2 in the Western Massachusetts Class D quarterfinals on Wednesday afternoon.

EASTHAMPTON — Hampshire Regional head baseball coach Mark Baldwin said matching up with Easthampton is “kind of like playing ourselves,” and added that his Raiders squad and the Eagles are very similarly constructed. The two teams played three weeks ago and Hampshire came from behind to win 5-3, and on Wednesday, it was yet another rock fight between the two Hampshire County programs.

The Belchertown baseball team has been dying to play baseball. Thanks to a rainout last Monday, March 31, the Orioles’ game against Northampton got postponed. They would have to wait until the end of the week to host Minnechaug for their season opener. Some teams had already played three games by last Friday, but Belchertown was finally suiting up to play their first – a 3-0 loss to Minnechaug.
