HOLYOKE — They say the third time is the charm, and it most certainly was for the top-seeded Pioneer baseball team on Wednesday afternoon at MacKenzie Stadium.

Just a week ago, the South Hadley and Frontier softball teams met in their regular-season finales, knowing that there was a strong possibility of meeting in the Western Massachusetts Class B semifinals a handful of days later. And after the No. 3 Tigers and No. 2 Redhawks earned decisive wins in their respective quarterfinal bouts, sure enough, they were back on the diamond on Sunday – battling it out for a spot in the Class B championship.

HADLEY — Trailing 6-0 entering the sixth inning, the Granby softball team gave its best shot at a comeback by rattling off a pair of runs and putting base runners on, but Hopkins Academy’s ace Cassandra Dion shut the door. The Golden Hawks added one more insurance run in the bottom half of the frame and went on to win 7-2 in the Western Massachusetts Class D quarterfinals on Wednesday afternoon.

WORCESTER — According to Oxford Dictionary, baseball refers to both the game and the ball used in it. It’s a popular sport played by two teams of nine players, who take turns batting and fielding. The game involves hitting a ball with a bat and running around four bases before the other team can return the ball.

NORTHAMPTON – You won’t find many high school teams in Massachusetts with more momentum at this point in the season than the Belchertown baseball team. The Orioles wrapped up their regular season with a 13-1 victory over Northampton on Wednesday, claiming their 11th consecutive win in decisive fashion.

AMHERST — It wouldn’t be unreasonable to believe that some coaches in the midst of a difficult losing season begin counting the days until it’s over around this time of year. And players on that team may feel the exact same way.

EASTHAMPTON — Hampshire Regional head baseball coach Mark Baldwin said matching up with Easthampton is “kind of like playing ourselves,” and added that his Raiders squad and the Eagles are very similarly constructed. The two teams played three weeks ago and Hampshire came from behind to win 5-3, and on Wednesday, it was yet another rock fight between the two Hampshire County programs.
The Northampton Post 28 Senior Legion baseball team (19U) will be holding tryouts on Saturday, May 3 and Sunday, May 4 from 10 a.m. to noon, and again on Saturday, May 10 also from 10 a.m. to noon at Arcanum Field in Florence.

May is officially upon us, and with that, so is tournament season. The Western Massachusetts baseball and softball tournaments will begin later this month. Some teams are over halfway through their regular season schedules, and others have a loaded back-half slate to make up for a handful of rain outs earlier this spring.

GRANBY — It was the Conner Bergeron show on Monday afternoon as the eighth-grader led the Greenfield baseball team past Granby, 10-0, at the Granby Baseball Diamond in a five-inning affair.

The Albany Twilight League has been around for almost 100 years, and fields some of the best former professional and college baseball players from across the country. Hampshire Regional head softball coach Brian McGan played in the Twilight League back in the 1980s for nearly a decade once his professional playing days came to a close.

NORTHAMPTON — The Holyoke baseball team’s 4-0 lead all of a sudden disappeared. Northampton stormed from behind to tie the game at four and send it to extra innings, and after getting through the top of the eighth inning unscathed, the Blue Devils had a chance to win it.

It’s once again that time of the season. Some teams are about a quarter of the way through their spring sports schedules, the cold weather seems to be in the rearview and high school notebooks are back! We began doing a weekly basketball notebook in the winter, as well as an all-winter sports notebook, and both were well received. So, here we are again with a spring edition.

WESTHAMPTON — The Hampshire Regional baseball team overcame an early 3-0 deficit to defeat Easthampton, 5-3, on Thursday afternoon at Earl Tonet Baseball Diamond.
The Belchertown baseball team needed extra innings to snatch a victory over Longmeadow on Tuesday night in a contest played under the lights at Dunkin’ Park in Hartford, Conn.

The Belchertown baseball team has been dying to play baseball. Thanks to a rainout last Monday, March 31, the Orioles’ game against Northampton got postponed. They would have to wait until the end of the week to host Minnechaug for their season opener. Some teams had already played three games by last Friday, but Belchertown was finally suiting up to play their first – a 3-0 loss to Minnechaug.

HADLEY – The Hopkins Academy baseball team has hit the field for the 2025 season and head coach Dan Vreeland is cautiously optimistic in this year’s edition of the Golden Hawks.
