A singer-songwriter showcase series in Florence is expanding to include the trans community.
There is a grave moral crisis underway in Northampton: namely, the economic injustice being perpetrated on working- and middle-class people in our community by city government. Understandably, the focus of news coverage has been on the inexcusable actions of the city toward the schools and what I believe is an undisguised effort to destroy the long-accepted notion in Northampton that a public education is a right — and this is happening with a shrug and an “Oh, well” by many people in town, especially the mayor’s most ardent supporters.
I was glad to start the new year off reading the Jan. 2 guest column by John Berkowitz [“Negotiate Ukraine peace now, not risk nuclear war with Russia”].I’m worried that the Ukraine war, if it escalates into a direct confrontation between the...
After partying on King Street with friends and family this New Year’s Eve and anxiously waiting for the ball on Hotel Northampton to rise, signalling the start of the new year, my granddaughter asked why all the huge Department of Public Works trucks...

Despite a year with record-breaking heat waves, wildfires, storms and floods, President-elect Donald Trump promises to drill-baby-drill. These policies will bring us closer to a climate tipping point, which is a threshold that, when crossed, will...

A few days before Christmas, I was driving up North King Street, Route 5 in Northampton, on my way to drop off cookies my wife had made for my sister and brother-in-law in Hatfield. And there he was. The man who waves at cars.I had seen this guy...

I sometimes look in the mirror at my unclothed body and think, “This is me!” I go to the closet and think, “These are my clothes!” I go to my workplace and think, “This is my job and these are my coworkers!” And I think of all the many people I know...
I just read ( "Comerford, Saunders amplify Shutesbury objections to DCR’s Quabbin cutting plans" Gazette, Dec. 24) that some neighbors of the Quabbin watershed opposed to removal of some white pines "… respectfully request that alternatives include...

SOUTHAMPTON — Saturday’s Lighted Tractor Parade is expected to be “largest event in Florence of the year,” and the “largest gathering in the Florence since Florence Night Out was last featured in 2022,” according to Florence Civic and Business...
When reading Raymond Fontaine’s guest column ”Memories of public radio past still glow” [Dec. 21], I was reminded of a story Garrison Keillor once told, of the little boy who, in the early days of television, was asked which he preferred, radio or TV?...
Donald Trump’s incoming administration poses a serious threat to Americans’ health, safety and freedoms. His cabinet picks show a total disregard for science, human rights, and competent governance. The work of protecting the vulnerable begins now —...
As Republicans continue to roll out Jim Crow laws for transgender people and a gravely disappointing number of Democrats remain silent or capitulate, it is imperative that LGBTQ+ people and allies firmly assert: We are not going back. These attacks on...
These are clearly not placid days in Northampton, which is riven by decisions about spending. The vibe today reminds me of when we were in the midst of the battle to expand the landfill. There was barely disguised contempt some in leadership had then...
One message of Donald Trump’s campaign was “Are you better off now than you were four years ago?” Analysts conclude that in spite of current low inflation, low unemployment, and a booming stock market, voters were upset by a 20% increase in the price...

I’ve been thinking about the election. I know, who hasn’t been thinking about it? But not just this election, all of our elections. I have two suggestions.Donald Trump has been crowing about a landslide. It’s not. In actual votes, 48.4% of Americans...
Thank you for the recent article speeding drivers [“No fast fix in sight,” Gazette, Nov. 16]. Thanks, also, to local police departments for their efforts to increase enforcement. Dangerous driving has become all too common as drivers focus on their...
I am writing in response to the guest column “We need to rethink ‘gender care’ for children” [Gazette, Nov. 14] by Karen Bercovici. This is an old and tired argument about trans people, couched in “protecting children,” that I thought we had gotten...
I am writing in response to the Nov. 14 guest column by Karen Bercovici entitled “We need to rethink ‘gender care’ for children.” I have a couple of questions. First, why does the Daily Hampshire Gazette keep printing opinion pieces challenging rights...
The recent Valley Light Opera production of “The McAdu” (“The Mikado” set in Scotland!), among many delights, revised the Lord High Executioner’s “little list” of characters “who won’t be missed” to include allusions to Trump and a local reference...
As the president of 80 Acres, I want to share with our community a message of gratitude, love, and honesty during a challenging time. At 80 Acres, we have always been driven by a deep commitment to serving those most impacted by climate injustice and...
I was disappointed to read yet another opinion piece about gender medical care for transgender young people. Nov. 13-19 has been designated Transgender Awareness Week. Rather than affirming transgender adults and children readers were subjected to...
